POTCHEFSTROOM – On Thursday, 17 August 2023, Iran Mathonsi (43) appeared before the Rustenburg Magistrate’s Court on charges of kidnapping and extortion. She will remain in custody until her next court appearance on Thursday, 24 August 2023, for a formal bail application. The accused’s court appearance stems from her apprehension by the provincial Crime Intelligence Unit and Gauteng Highway patrol members on Tuesday, 15 August 2023, after information about a suspected Silver Ford Figo was operationalised. The said car was traced and stopped in Randfontein.
Allegedly, a 17-year-old girl was reported kidnapped in Marikana on Sunday, 13 August 2023. The girl, who was forced inside a Ford Figo boot, was later released after ransom money was paid. Investigation into the matter continues and the police cannot rule out the possibility of linking the suspects with other cases.
The North West Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Sello Kwena, welcomed the arrest and subsequent appearance of the suspect in court. He also thanked all the members involved for their dedication and quick response, which led to the arrest. He reminded all women to be wise and choose safety above situations that can cause them harm and that police will continue the fight against Gender-Based Violence (GBV).
