Maitland Flying Squad members recover hijacked vehicle in Nyanga

CAPE TOWN – The vigilance of Maitland Flying Squad members contributed to the recovery of a hijacked vehicle and the arrests of six suspects in two separate incidents.

Last night the members embarked on patrols in Nyanga after they were informed of a vehicle that was hijacked in the area. They recovered the abandoned vehicle in the area with its keys still in the ignition. The vehicle was searched during which police recovered a remote jamming device, a 9 mm blank pistol and one blank round. The vehicle and all the evidence were seized and handed in as evidence.

In an unrelated matter, on Saturday afternoon, 19 August 2023, members of Maitland Flying Squad pulled over a suspicious vehicle on the N2 freeway near Cape Town International Airport. They searched the vehicle and found a remote jamming device in the vehicle. They also found and seized bank cards and clothing that do not belong to the occupants of the vehicle.

A total of six suspects aged between 18 and 40 were arrested and detained at Nyanga SAPS on a case of possession of presumed stolen property and possession of vehicle breaking implements. The suspects will appear in the Athlone Magistrates’ Court on Monday, 21 August 2023 on the mentioned charges.
