There were sounds of ululation and tears of joy when the man who murdered the former first lady, Marike De Klerk, was released from prison after serving a 22-year sentence.

Luyanda Mboniswa murdered De Klerk at her beachfront apartment in Tableview, where he worked as a bodyguard when he was just 21 years old.

The court convicted him of murder, robbery with aggravating circumstances, and housebreaking.

He was found not guilty on a charge of rape.

The now 42-year-old Mboniswa embraced his mother and family members outside of the offices of correctional services in Gqeberha.

When asked how he felt, his only response was: “I am just tired for now.”

His mother, Sindiswa Mboniswa said she was overjoyed at her son’s release.

“My son has been incarcerated for a very long time. I never thought this day would come.

“I am grateful that I could live to see the day he was released.”

Sindiswa confirmed that her son would be residing at the family home in Motherwell, whilst on parole.

“We are going to celebrate his homecoming. He is looking well, he’s gotten so fat,” she said.

Advocate Fikile Nkosi of Revonia Campher Attorneys, who assisted Mboniswa with his release, said the De Klerk family did not oppose his release on parole.

This was confirmed by the deceased’s son, Jan de Klerk

“We did not oppose the process.

“I do not have any further comment,” he added.
