Law enforcement agencies persist in the fight against non-ferrous and essential infrastructure related crimes

The prevention and combatting of non-ferrous metal and essential infrastructure related crimes remains a priority for the police in Gauteng as this offences have a detrimental impact on both the economy and society at large.

For the past two months the police with the assistance of other law enforcement agencies comprising of Metro Police, Traffic Department, private security companies under the banner of Eyes and Ears (E2) project and other stakeholders have been hard at work and recovered over 4 000 kg of copper including cellphone tower batteries across the Gauteng Province.

The successes are as a result of different crime prevention activities conducted in the province which includes, compliance inspection of second hand goods dealers, raiding of scrapyards, intelligence driven operations, roadblocks and stop and searches.

The Provincial Commissioner of the police in Gauteng, Lieutenant General Elias Mawela has commended the various law enforcement agencies and stakeholders for their concerted efforts that continue to yield positive results. He also praised members of the public for reporting crime and providing tip-offs as most the recoveries and arrests are as a results of information given by them. “We must all take part in the fight against crime, especially against non-ferrous and essential infrastructure related crime as it has a direct negative impact on the sustainability of economic security and growth of the country, said Lt Gen Mawela.
