The commitment of two off-duty police members attached to Worcester Anti-Gang Unit to remove illegal firearms and ammunition in an effort to safeguard their community proved to be successful when they placed themselves on duty after they received information of a possible illegal firearm which was stored at the premises.
The information which was operationalised took the members to a premises in Flat D, Riverview, Worcester on 16 September 2023 at about 09:30 where they ensued with a search of the premises belonging to a member of a local gang. During the search of the house, the members found a .38 Special revolver with five 9mm rounds of ammunition in the bathroom door. The firearm was handed in as evidence. No arrest was made, but an enquiry was opened to continue with investigation.
The firearm will be subjected to forensic examination to determine whether it was used in the commission of crime.
In an unrelated matter, police members attached to Operation Restore who are deployed in Delft area arrested a 29-year-old suspect for the possession of an imitation firearm and a blank round of ammunition on Saturday, 16 September 2023 at 23:00.
While deployed in Delft the members reacted when they heard random shots being fired in the vicinity of Carnation Street, Delft South. They noticed a suspicious man running from the area where the shooting occurred. The members immediately gave chase on foot and managed to apprehend the person. The suspect was later charged as above and scheduled to appear in the Blue Downs Magistrates court on Monday, 18 September 2023 on the mentioned charges.
