Concerted efforts to eradicate the prevalence of illicit firearms which are in circulation to commit crime against our communities proved to be successful following the seizure of four firearms through intelligence driven operations by the Anti-Gang Unit (AGU).
In the early hours of yesterday morning, Wednesday, 20 September 2023, members attached to the provincial AGU conducted an intelligent driven operation in the Strand and surrounding precincts due to a mass shooting reported in the area recently.
Information received about an unknown male who might be linked to shooting incidents was operationalised which took members of the AGU to an address situated in Gustrow Avenue, in Strand where they ensued with a search. During the search they recovered three unlicensed firearms, 23 rounds of ammunition and 3 magazines. As a result the members arrested a 21-year- old male for the illegal possession of firearms as well as the illegal possession of ammunition.
In addition, the team proceeded to a premises in 8th Street, Rusthof where they conducted a thorough search. An Astra 6,35 pistol was found hidden in the kitchen. A 35-year-old male was arrested for the illegal possession of a firearm.
The suspects who are linked to the gang in the area, will appear in Strand Magistrates’ court on mentioned charges, once charged.
