Two suspects aged 39 and 58 including a Metro Police officer were rearrested yesterday, 09 October 2023 for transgressions committed in 2017.
It is reported that on 28 July 2017, Metro Officers went to a restaurant at Emperor’s Palace in Kempton Park where five employees including the main chef were arrested for being undocumented in the country. The Metro Police Officers then demanded R50 000 as gratification in lieu of releasing the undocumented employees. The owner of the restaurant obliged and paid the R50 000 gratification to secure the release of his five employees and immediately reported the matter to Serious Corruption Investigation based at Germiston.
On 23 April 2019 the first suspect, a 58 year old Metro Traffic Officer was arrested and on 21 May 2019, the second suspect was arrested in Benoni. The matter was enrolled in the Boksburg Magistrates’ court. On 28 February 2022 this matter was struck off roll due to unavailability of witness (the undocumented Bangladeshi national went back to Bangladesh due to Covid 19). On 19 June 2023, the matter was re-enrolled following rigorous dissent on the matter being put back on the roll. Warrants of were issued on the 11 September 2023 by the Boksburg Magistrates court.
The pair will appear in the Boksburg Magistrates court on 25 October 2023 facing charges of Contravention of the Prevention and Combating of Corrupt Activities Act (PRECCA) of 2004, corruption alternatively theft.
The Provincial Head of the DPCI in Gauteng, Major General Ebrahim Kadwa welcomed the re-arrest of the pair. Major General Kadwa also appreciated the understanding and cooperation of the Director for Public Prosecutions in Gauteng in ensuring that those who contravene the laws of the country are duly prosecuted.
