Accused sentenced to ten years imprisonment for murder

On Monday 9 October 2023 Ntuzuma Regional Court sentenced Lindokuhle Buthelezi (21) to ten years imprisonment for murder of an off-duty police official, Constable Sizwe Mthethwa.

On 7 February 2021, Constable Mthethwa who was stationed at Inanda police station was stabbed and killed by Buthelezi. It is alleged that Mthethwa was on his way to the suspect’s home to meet with the parents after a fight between Buthelezi and Mthethwa’s stepson.

However, Buthelezi attacked them with a sharp object before they arrived at his home. Two victims were also stabbed during the incident and were taken to hospital for medical attention. Buthelezi allegedly stole the deceased’s cell phones.

A case of murder, attempted murder and theft was reported at Inanda police station and the case docket was allocated to the Hawks members from Durban Serious Organised Crime Investigation for intensive investigation. Buthelezi was arrested three days after the incident and he appeared in court several times until he was found guilty in August this year.

The KwaZulu-Natal Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation Provincial Head, Major General (Dr) Lesetja Senona welcomed the sentence and commended the members for the good work. “
