17 years’ imprisonment handed down to murder accused

The North West Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Sello Kwena, welcomes the 17 years’ imprisonment sentencing handed down to Thabang “Leshala” David Masilo (28) by the Wolmaranstad Magistrates’ Court on Thursday, 02 November 2023.

Masilo was sentenced for murder and assault with intent to do Grievous Bodily Harm (GBH) following his arrest on Friday, 12 May 2023, for stabbing to death his 24-year-old girlfriend, Lindiwe Delfa Tladi. The court heard that Masilo visited Tladi at her residential place at Chris Hani Section in Tswelelang Location on Friday afternoon, 12 May 2023, when an argument ensued between them.

Masilo was accusing Tladiof of cheating and ultimately stabbed her with a knife. Tladi managed to run to her neighbour’s house for safety, but the accused followed her and stabbed her and the neighbour and they were both transported to a local clinic. Tladi was transferred to a local hospital where she was declared dead on arrival. Although Masilo fled the scene, he was arrested at his residential place and charged with murder and assault GBH. Masilo has been behind bars ever since his arrest. He was further declared unfit to possess a firearm in terms of Section 103 of the Firearms Control Act, 2000 (Act No. 60 of 2000). The convict was sentenced as follows:

· Count 1: Murder: 15 years’ imprisonment

· Count 2: Assault GBH: two years’ imprisonment

The Provincial Police Commissioner, Lieutenant General Sello Kwena thanked the Investigating Officer, Sargeant Itumeleng Seboco of Wolmaransstad Detectives and all other role players including the Prosecutor, Adv Linda Dannon for working together to secure the conviction which he said will certainly serve as a lesson that Gender Based Violence is will not be tolerated.
