The Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA) has announced that it will use artificial intelligence-powered Computer Vision tech at the year’s final Formula 1 Grand Prix in Abu Dhabi, Reuters reports.

The technology uses shape analysis to determine the number of pixels that cross the line at the edge of the track, and it is being employed to help officials check track limit violations.

It should also help to reduce their workloads and speed up feedback times.

In July, the Australian Grand Prix saw four officials review approximately 1,200 potential violations. After several track limit violations went unpunished in October’s US Grand Prix, officials acknowledged that a solution was needed.

The Computer Vision tech it will employ at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix has been used in medicine to help review data from cancer screenings.

Tim Maylon, FIA deputy race director and head of remote operations, said the tech would be used to throw out non-violations quickly.

“They don’t want to use the Computer Vision to diagnose cancer, what they want to do is to use it to throw out the 80% of cases where there clearly is no cancer in order to give the well-trained people more time to look at the 20%,” said Maylon.

“That’s what we are targeting,” he added.

The FIA hopes using Computer Vision tech will help reduce the number of infringements officials manually review to around 50 per race.
