Police have their sights on illegal possession of firearms

The vigilance and swift response of members attached to Milnerton SAPS landed a 48-year-old male behind bars for the possession of a prohibited firearm.

On 03 December 2023 at about 05:20, the member were busy with visible patrols in the precinct when they were approached by personnel of a security company who informed them about a suspect who is in possession of a firearm. They immediately approached the suspect who started running when he saw the members approaching. The members chased him down and searched him upon which they found a prohibited firearm in his possession. The suspect was arrested and detained at Milnerton SAPS.

In an unrelated matter, members of Operation Shanela followed up on information that led to the arrest of a 21-year-old suspect who was found in possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.

On 03 December 2023 at about 00:01, members were patrolling Mfuleni area when they received information about firearms being stored at a premises in Tyume Street, Extension 6, Mfuleni. The members immediately operationalised the information and found the suspect in possession of a Petro Beretta Z88 pistol and 15 rounds of ammunition. The suspect was arrested on a charge of possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.

In addition to the above, members attached to Operation Restore arrested a 30-year-old man for possession of a prohibited firearm on 03 December 2023 at about 22:00. Members were busy with high density patrols in the Elsies River area when they saw a suspicious looking man in 34th Avenue, Elsies River. They stopped and search him and confiscated a 9mm pistol with serial number removed and two blank 9mm rounds of ammunition. He was arrested for the possession of a prohibited firearm and illegal possession of ammunition.

The suspects are due to appear in the Cape Town, Bluedowns and Goodwood Magistrates’ courts today , 04 December 2023, on their respective charges.
