Police minister Bheki Cele has presented the latest crime statistics for South Africa, covering the first quarter of the 2023/24 administrative year, which runs from April to June 2023.

THE LATEST CRIME STATS WAS PRESENTED EARLIER THIS YEAR

Violent crime like murder is tracking lower in the first quarter compared to the same period last year, with 6,228 murders recorded vs 6,424 murders in the previous period.

Sexual offences are also down 2%, while carjacking has also eased, down 6.4% year-on-year.

However, while these crime categories are not as bad as they were in Q1 2022/23, the numbers are still alarmingly high.

Police minister Bheki Cele said for the first time since COVID-19 reached our shores in 2020, the murder rate in the country has declined in a single quarter.

CELE SAID THE MURDER RATE DECLINED FOR THE FIRST TIME SINCE COVID

“Between April and June this year, police recorded 6 228 counts of murders. This is 196 less people killed compared to the same time last year.

“Out of the 6 228 people killed during April to June, 1 188 were women and children. Apart from the Mpumalanga and the Northern Cape, ALL provinces recorded decreases for murder in this quarter.”

THE MURDER RATE IN THESE TWO PROVINCES DROPPED

Cele furthermore said while the Northern Cape recorded a 11.1% increase in murders, much-welcomed double-digit percentage declines were noted in the Limpopo and North West provinces.

“The murders for April to June 2023 in those two provinces dropped by 10.0% and 11.5% respectively.”
