The commitment of police officers to keep their communities safe resulted in the detention of three suspects on charges of possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition on Friday, 15 December 2023.
Nyanga police were busy with crime prevention duties at about 07:40 near to Zwelitsha Drive. They noticed a suspicious white Toyota Avanza driving at high speed. The members approached the vehicle and the driver sped away. They stopped and searched the vehicle and the occupants, confiscating two 9mm pistols with ammunition and cash. The two suspects could not provide a valid license to be in possession of the mentioned firearms which resulted in the arrest of the two suspects on charges of possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition.
Meanwhile Steenberg police members were busy with crime combatting duties in Lavender Hill when they heard multiple gunshots. The members drove in the direction of St Ambrose Street and noticed a Chevrolet Optra approaching at high speed. The members gave chase and saw the suspects stopped their vehicle and fled in different directions. They kept their eyes focussed on the unknown man with the firearm in his hand. They apprehended the man and confiscated a 9mm pistol. They arrested the 33-year-old man on a charge of possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.
Once charged the suspects are expected to make their respective court appearances in the Athlone and Wynberg Magistrates’ Courts on the mentioned charges.
