The protection of our living marine resources remain one of the Western Cape police’s priorities, especially along the Western Cape coastline where these resources has become exhausted as it often fall target to syndicates. The vigilance of members attached Gansbaai SAPS in collaboration with Hermanus SAPS led to the arrest of a 27 year old man who was found in possession of 5200 pieces of abalone.
In the early hours this morning, 28 January 2024 at about 03:45, the members of Gansbaai spotted a suspicious vehicle speeding recklessly towards Hermanus. They chased down the white Isuzu LDV but the driver refused to stop. The members summoned the assistance from the members from Hermanus SAPS who assisted them to force the LDV to a halt in Seventh Street, Voëlklip, Hermanus. The driver of the LDV attempted to flee but was apprehended by the members.
With the search of the white Isuzu, the members discovered the 5200 abalone of which the value still needs to be determined. The abalone and vehicle were seized as evidence.
The suspect will appear in the Hermanus Magistrates’ court once he had been charged. He face charges relating to the illegal possession of abalone, reckless and negligent driving as well as attempted Murder as he attempted to push the police vehicles off the road during the high speed chase.
Western Cape police management lauded the members involved in the bust for their bravery and commitment to bring the suspect to book.
