FRANSCOIS VAN DER MERWE DIT NOT GET BAIL

Limpopo. -Francois van der Merwe, 25, of the Bittereinders Youth Movement’s bail application in the case made by police, appeared again in Groblersdal Magistrate’s Court yesterday, but he did not get bail.

The case was postponed to February 15.

Willem Petzer has made a post that says: “Francois van der Merwe remains still locked. Case postponed until February 15th. My heart is broken. It’s been 22 days! ”

Van der Merwe was arrested on January 24 during an approved, peaceful march in Groblersdal for assault. He has been in custody ever since.

Col. Malesela Ledwaba said Van der Merwe was arrested for assault and preventation from the police in the execution of their duties.

The outstanding charge of assault at Wonderboompoort police station in Gauteng, which was also brought against Van der Merwe, has since been withdrawn by the complainant.
