Crime Stats: 136 rapes in SA DAILY

Police Minister Bheki Cele revealed the country’s latest crime stats which painted a slight decrease in reported rape cases.

According to the third quarter crime stats, 12 211 rapes were reported across the country between October and December 2023.

In the same period in 2022, 12 419 cases were reported- a difference of 208.

LATEST RAPE STATISTICS

Provincially, 20% of the country’s rape cases have been reported in Gauteng. Within the three month window period, 2 441 cases were reported. It is closely followed by KwaZulu-Natal on 2140 and the Eastern Cape on 2096. The three provinces were the only ones to surpass the 2000 case mark.

Forty-five percent of the reported rape cases(5 454 cases) took place in the home of the victim or the perpetrator. While 1 910 cases allegedly took place in a public area such as an open field, parking lot recreational centre or a park.

Top five police stations that reported the highest number of cases in the country are:

1. Mfuleni- 83 cases

2. Mthatha- 83

3. Thohoyandou- 80

4. Lusikisiki- 73

5. Seshego- 66
