The South African Police Service (SAPS) Detectives in Thohoyandou have initiated a manhunt for a known suspect involved in the tragic shooting and subsequent death of a 43-year-old man in the mountains of Makonde Village on 01 March 2024 at about 15:15.
According to reports, the victim was with his friends gathering traditional herbs when the suspect, accompanied by a pack of approximately 20 dogs, approached them at the site.
An altercation ensued between the suspect and the victim, leading to a heated argument. The suspect, who is known to the victim, brandished a firearm and fired multiple shots, fatally injuring him. In the chaos that followed, the victim’s friends managed to flee the scene and sought assistance from nearby community members.
Upon receiving reports of the shooting, the police swiftly responded, with Emergency Medical Services personnel also dispatched to the scene. Tragically, the victim succumbed to his injuries, having sustained multiple gunshot wounds to his body. The identity of the deceased will be disclosed in due course.
A murder case has been opened, prompting an immediate activation of a manhunt to locate and apprehend the suspect responsible for this senseless act.
In light of this appalling incident, the Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe has unequivocally denounced the violence and instructed the police to intensify efforts to apprehend the suspect swiftly.
