Seven (7) including a police Sergeant stationed in Pretoria were arrested early this morning, 05 March 2024 in a takedown operation in Soweto, Diepsloot, Johannesburg, Hammanskraal, Soshanguve and Magnolia Park in Pretoria.
These arrests relate to the investigation into allegations of fraud and money laundering committed at Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (PRASA), whereby fraudulent claims were submitted to PRASA, alleging that the claimants were injured in train accidents, whilst they were not. The monies were unduly paid to the claimants. Investigation also revealed that two (2) employees from PRASA were responsible for processing these fraudulent claims and then shared with the claimants upon pay out. As a result, PRASA suffered an actual loss of R9.2 million.
The seven suspects will appear the Specialised Commercial Crimes Court sitting in Palm Ridge Magistrates’ court tomorrow, 06 March 2024.
