A South Korean-flagged tanker, the Keoyoung Sun, capsized on Tuesday off the coast of Japan’s Mutsure Island in the country’s southwest. The ship carried a crew of eleven.

Nine crew members were rescued and taken to hospitals; eight were reported to have died, while one remained alive.

Two members of the crew were still missing. The Japanese coast guard was searching for them.

The ship has been at anchor, but was buffeted by rough seas. The ship had sent out a message early on Tuesday morning requesting help as the ship was tilting.

The Keoyoung Sun was carrying a cargo of some 980 tons of acrylic acid, but no reports of spillage have yet been received.
