Building in George collapses, people trapped

A building under construction in Victoria Street has collapsed.

The public is urgently informed that access to Victoria Road from York Street has been blocked.

Emergency services are on site and a number of ambulances will be required to enter the area due to multiple patients.

The public should please refrain from trying to view the incident and move away from Victoria to allow emergency vehicles easy access.

GEORGE NEWS & VIDEOS – Emergency workers freed the injured from the rubble of the collapsed multi-storey building that was under construction on Victoria Street in George.

According to a reliable source, some 59 people are believed to be trapped, although the extent of their injuries is not clear.

Many local emergency services are involved in the rescue effort. Chaos erupted in the immediate vicinity with bystanders trying to catch a glimpse of the disaster as rescue vehicles blasted up and down York Street with ringing sirens.
