A 22-year-old accused was sentenced by the Kimberley Regional Court for the rape of a 12-year-old child.
Detective Sgt Neo Noge of the Kimberley, Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit (FCS) led the investigation and secured the conviction of the perpetrator.
Evidence presented before court revealed that on Saturday, 04 February 2023, the 12-year-old minor victim went to the bathroom after having supper.
The victim was grabbed by the 22-year-old male patient at the mental hospital, who pushed her inside the bathroom, locked the door, and raped her.
The victim informed the hospital management, who notified the police.
The accused was arrested, and bail was successfully denied.
The accused was convicted and sentenced to four years direct imprisonment.
The court declared the accused unfit to work with children, and his name is to be entered in the National Child Protection Register.
