Gauteng Police apprehends over 700 suspects during Weekend

This past weekend, the Gauteng Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Tommy Mthombeni, led a successful Operation Shanela in the Province. The operation covered all districts in Gauteng and resulted in the apprehension of 751 suspects involved in various serious crimes, including murder, attempted murder, rape, business robbery, drug dealing, possession of suspected stolen vehicles, assault, undocumented persons, and possession of unlicensed firearms.

The multi-disciplinary operation commenced on the evening of Saturday, 22 June 2024, with strategic roadblocks and targeted raids focused on capturing wanted suspects, including those who have committed crimes against women and children. Through exceptional coordination, law enforcement located and arrested suspects across different parts of Gauteng, thwarting any attempt to evade the law.

The Saturday evening operation was preceded by the detectives’ suspects raiding operations across the province with notable arrests.

The Provincial Commissioner took charge of the operation in Jeppe, Johannesburg District, where violent crimes such as murder, assault, and robbery are prevalent. At a roadblock, 25 suspects were apprehended for driving under the influence of alcohol, 55 were illegal immigrants, one for dealing in dagga, and one was found in possession of a firearm and ammunition.

Operation Shanela is set to continue until a substantial reduction in crime is achieved in Gauteng. The apprehended suspects will soon appear before various provincial Magistrate’s Courts.
