Enter at Your Own Risk: Khayelitsha, South Africa | No-Go Zones – World’s Toughest Places
On the streets of Khayelitsha, Cape Town, the struggle for power is a topic of intense debate. This vast township, plagued by high crime, violence, unemployment, and poverty, was established in the mid-1980s during apartheid when black people were forcibly relocated from urban areas. Decades of neglect have allowed gangs and extortion rackets to thrive, bringing terror and misery to millions. Dino and his gang, representative of many young men with limited opportunities, navigate the township with ruthless violence, seeing crime as their only option. At the top of the criminal hierarchy is Mr. X, a figure infamous for extortion, whose operations stifle economic opportunities and deepen the residents’ poverty and fear.Amidst this bleak landscape, community groups like Langa for Men and leaders like Luyolo offer alternatives to violence. Luyolo mentors young boys and takes them on trips to the ocean, providing hope and an escape from township pressures. Monde, the chairman of the Community Policing Forum, tirelessly advocates for justice, working with the police and community members to improve safety. Complementing his efforts, the women of the neighborhood watch, led by Mamma Fillika, patrol dangerous areas unarmed and unpaid, serving as a powerful deterrent to criminals. This documentary explores the resilience and struggle of those trying to survive in Khayelitsha, highlighting the complex dynamics at play and the ongoing battle between despair and hope.

Exploring the DARK SIDE of JOHANNESBURGMar 27, 2024
Is Johannesburg the most dangerous city in the world? This is the question asked by the very serious The Guardian a few years ago.
Murders, kidnappings, armed attacks: tourists who would like to visit the economic capital of South Africa are the subject of numerous warnings by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
In this travel diary, Christophe Hondelatte, the true crime specialist shows us around the city.
Accompanied by South African journalists specializing in crime, Christophe Hondelatte multiplies the strong experiences: he embarks with police officers launched into a chase at more than 120mph, participates in a clandestine rodeo with stolen cars, visits a prison where the detainees cram sixty into each cell or even roam a nature reserve threatened by poachers…
But Johannesburg also has its specificities: satanic crimes, “corrective” sexual assaults on lesbians, sorcerers who protect criminals… So many dark facets of Johannesburg that Christophe Hondelatte and director Lionel Langlade will introduce us to, by meeting culprits and victims, repentant criminals , mercenary police officers and thugs…
Sometimes frightening, sometimes moving but always powerful, these encounters tell us a lot about South African society and about Johannesburg, a multicultural city which never really recovered from Apartheid…
