Alleged kidnapper shot dead- victims rescued

An alleged kidnapper was shot dead and one wounded during a rescue operation at an informal settlement in Crystal Park in Benoni on Monday.

National Police Spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe says two men aged 34 and 64 were both kidnapped on Sunday, while driving along Putfontein road.

She says police were notified and an elite Special Task Force was mobilised.

Brigadier Mathe says the kidnappers at this time had already made ransom demands to the families.

On Monday afternoon, the team pounced on the kidnappers where a shootout ensued. One was shot and killed, one wounded and four were arrested and taken into police custody.

Brigadier Mathe assured communities that SAPS had the necessary expertise and capabilities to intercept and take down syndicates involved in kidnappings for ransom.

Last week, six kidnappers were arrested and two businessmen were rescued.
