Cops make breakthrough in high jump champ Freitag’s murder

Police in Gauteng have made a breakthrough in the murder investigation of former high-jump world champion Jacques Freitag.

The 42-year-old former athlete went missing in June and his body was found on the 1st of July near the Zandfontein cemetery.

Several media outlets reported that a possible love triangle could have been the motive for Freitag’s murder and on Wednesday police in Hercules in Gauteng obtained warrants of arrest for Rudie Lubbe and Chantelle Oosthuizen.

Police believe that they are both on the run following the discovery of Freitag’s body.
Lubbe and Oosthuizen are facing charges of murder and conspiracy to commit murder.

Freitag sustained a bullet wound and several other injuries.

Freitag made his Olympic debut for South Africa in 2004 although he missed out on the final he bounced back a year later to increase his African record to 2.38m, a record that stands today.

Anyone with information on the whereabouts of the suspects is encouraged to contact the investigating officer Detective Captain Martin Smith at 082 778 9385
