    • Justice Ministry blocks and bungles access to Zondo database: A News24 investigation has revealed that the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) is facing delays from the Justice Ministry in accessing crucial evidence for state capture cases and in establishing the Investigating Directorate (ID) permanently. Additionally, a failure to maintain a key digital evidence database, previously gathered by Zondo Commission investigators, has resulted in the NPA and ID losing access to vital incriminating information, putting state capture prosecutions at risk.     • VBS scandal back in court: Up to 13 people were implicated in the VBS scandal, where over R1.9 billion was looted from the mutual bank between 2015 and 2018, and they are expected to appear in the Pretoria High Court today. The group of 13 are involved in what has been described as the grand bank heist. The accused include former VBS CEO, treasurer and non-executive members, as well as senior ANC officials.[SABC]

    • ANC’s Dada Morero tipped for Joburg mayor: Following the resignation of Al Jama-ah’s Kabelo Gwamanda as Johannesburg mayor, the ANC has said that it will nominate its regional leader and current MMC for Finance, Dada Morero, for the city’s top job. With the vote taking place on Friday, it seems that Morero has enough backing from other parties in the council to get over the line. [EWN]

    • Limpopo school has classes under trees while waiting for government intervention: Classes at H S Phillips Secondary School in Limpopo are being held under trees due to a lack of classrooms following the destruction of one of the two original classroom blocks by heavy winds in 2021, and damage to the administration office this year. The school still waits for the provincial education department to build new classrooms. Five temporary mobile classrooms were provided by the education department, but the school still faces a space shortage, leading to outdoor lessons. [GroundUp]

    • Markets: The rand gained against a weaker dollar on Tuesday, shrugging off weak mining and unemployment data. On Wednesday (14 August), the rand was trading at R18.15 to the dollar, R23.29 to the pound, and R19.90 to the euro. Oil is trading at $81.12 a barrel. [Reuters]
