As part of celebrating Women’s Month, a group of women in the Justice, Crime Prevention and Security (JCPS) Cluster collaborated an conducted a multi-disciplinary roadblock on the N4 Toll Road near Alkmar.
The roadblock took place today (15 August 2024) from 9h00 and was supported by Mpumalanga Community Safety, Security and Liaison MEC, Mr Jackie Macie and SAPS Acting Provincial Commissioner, Major General (Dr) Zeph Mkhwanazi.
Institutions and organizations that participated on the road block were Provincial Traffic and Road Safety Education (DCSSL), Provincial Transport Inspectorate (DPWRT), SAPS, Mbombela Local Municipality Traffic and Law Enforcement, Department of Home Affairs, SARS, Department of Correctional Services, Cross Border Road Transport Agency SANDF and local Disaster Management.
The MEC, Mr Jackie Macie has commended the group of women for the successes during the operation especially the two arrests they have made for two men who were found in possession of dagga in a minibus taxi.
Macie has applauded the women saying this should remove the old stigma that law enforcement work is only for men.
“We are proud to have such hard-working women who are not afraid to go out there to face law breakers. We must therefore deal with those who think they will just do as they please when approached by female officers,” he said.
He mentioned that this operation was not only to celebrate Women’s Month, but also to fight against the abuse of female officers by either their male colleagues or members of the community.
“This must therefore show us that women are capable too, they can equally perform what other male officers perform. We need to support them as male colleagues and stop looking down on them,” he concluded.
At the same operation over 230 vehicles were stopped and searched, and about 20 fines were issued for different violations.
Furthermore, 170 passengers and drivers were educated on road safety.
