The Bethlehem-based Serious Corruption Investigation (SCI) detectives arrested a 53-year-old Free State Gambling and Liquor Authority District Manager on Friday, 16 August 2024. He was arrested at the district offices in Bethlehem during a Hawks operation. The suspect will make his first appearance in the local Magistrates’ Court on Monday, 19 August 2024, facing allegations of corruption.
The detectives were reacting to complaints that the District Manager was demanding gratification from prospective liquor license holders in order to facilitate authorisation. During a visit to his office, the suspect was found in possession of R2 000 which he had solicited in this manner.
Free State Head of the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (Hawks), Major General Mokgadi Bokaba says it is disturbing that a person in a position of authority would ignore their duty to fight corruption. “We have to be harsher on managers who, instead of reporting fraud and corruption, commit crime,” she said.
