California Wildfires LIVE: How Did the Los Angeles Fire Spread so Rapidly?
The Los Angeles winter wildfires have shocked the world, with a death toll of 16 and over 12,000 structures destroyed. Experts point to unusual weather patterns, including wet winters in 2022 and 2023 that fueled vegetation growth, followed by a dry 2024 season that turned plants into tinder. Strong Santa Ana winds worsened the situation, rapidly spreading flames, while reports suggest power cables may have ignited fires. Climate change activists highlight the growing intensity of such disasters, while political figures like Donald Trump and Elon Musk blame the California governor’s environmental and DEI policies. The Palisades Fire remains a major threat, with fresh evacuations in Brentwood and Bel Air as officials investigate the root causes.

Prolonged drought, an exceptionally dry winter, and powerful Santa Ana winds set up a dangerous triple whammy of extreme conditions that have fueled several out-of-control wildfires in the Los Angeles area.

Fast-moving fires have engulfed the Pacific Palisades neighborhood, along with parts of the Hollywood Hills, Pasadena, Altadena, Sylmar, and other areas, with 11 deaths reported and more than 12,000 structures destroyed as of Friday.

The Eaton fire has devastated the Altadena area of Los Angeles, leaving many homes in ruins. Among the affected residents, Felipe Carrillo distinguished himself by refusing to evacuate and instead fighting to save his home using only a garden hose. Global’s Neetu Garcha has the story.

Meanwhile, Canada and Mexico have stepped up to aid in combating the flames threatening Los Angeles. This co-operation comes against a backdrop of heightened political tensions, particularly with the U.S. president-elect Donald Trump’s approach, which includes discussions of tariffs and potential “takeovers.” Global’s Nathaniel Dove reports on the significant role Canada is playing in this crisis and the positive diplomatic message it sends amidst the ongoing political strife.

Canada’s top politicians have spent several weeks attempting to convince U.S. President-elect Donald Trump not to impose tariffs on Canadian imports. This includes Alberta Premier Danielle Smith, who visited Trump at his Mar-a-Lago home in Florida this past weekend. Global’s Heather Yourex-West looks at what the two discussed and whether Smith’s last-ditch effort will influence Trump, who officially returns to office next week.

And, Elon Musk’s significant influence on U.S. politics is well-documented, particularly regarding his connections with President-elect Donald Trump. However, his engagement in European politics is less recognized and increasingly controversial. Musk has been openly supporting far-right leaders across Europe, leading to a growing backlash from national leaders who are urging him to refrain from interfering in their political affairs. Global’s Vincent McAviney reports

Los Angeles Fire LIVE: New Massive Wildfire Breaks Out in Southern California Amid Strong Winds
A new fast-moving wildfire broke out in southern California’s Ventura County on Monday (January 13), sending firefighters and first responders to battle the massive blaze amid strong winds.
The fire, dubbed by local media as the “Auto Fire”, was first reported at around 7:45 p.m. (0345 GMT January 14) in the Santa Clara River bottom near North Ventura Boulevard and Auto Center Drive, according to the Ventura County Fire Department (VCFD). The fire burnt an area of 5 acres while approximately 75 firefighters were on scene battling the raging fire, a social media post by the VCFD said.
Aerial images from local media showed the blaze burning against a backdrop of lights from the county. At 0530 GMT, the fire measured approximately 1,033 feet (308 metres) from Victoria Avenue, a major road in the area, fueled by Santa Ana wind gusts.
A red flag warning was in effect late on Monday as dry, dangerous Santa Ana winds picked up speed. Gusts could hit 75 mph (120 kph) starting at around 4 a.m. Tuesday (1200 GMT), said a meteorologist with the National Weather Service’s Weather Prediction Center.

The Los Angeles wildfires have left a trail of destruction, killing at least 24 people and destroying thousands of structures, officials said. Although containing the deadly infernos has been difficult and will remain so, ominous new wind warnings have been issued for Southern California communities. Here are the latest updates on the most destructive in the history of Los Angeles which has scorched over 23,000 acres, destroying homes, businesses, and numerous landmarks:

    1. Palisades Fire has expanded to the north and the east owing to which evacuation orders and warnings were issued to parts of Encino and Brentwood. The fire has been 13% contained so far.

    2. Officials said that Santa Ana winds that have fueled the blazes for the past week were picking up in Los Angeles and Ventura counties. The resurging winds could complicate efforts and enhance the risk level, officials warned as they forecast north-northeast wind gusts between 35 to 55 mph. A red flag warning is in effect until Wednesday as strong winds will be accompanied by low humidity and dry vegetation.

    3. Over 12,000 structures have been damaged or destroyed by the wildfires, which have consumed about 40,300 acres of total land.

    4. Evacuation orders have been given to 105,000 residents while another 87,000 residents have been warned that they may have to evacuate.

    5. Eaton fire has been contained 27% while Hurst fire has been stopped 89%. Three other blazes- Kenneth, Sunset, and Sunswept- have been contained completely.

What JUST HAPPENED In California SHOCKED The World!
After years of severe drought, California is now dealing with a new problem: widespread flooding and environmental dangers caused by a winter of heavy snow and rain that has never been seen before. California’s ecosystems have been greatly affected by this heavy rain, and the effects are not always predicted. One amazing effect of this weather event is that a huge lake in the San Joaquin Valley that had dried up almost 100 years ago has come back to life. This valley, which is between Los Angeles and San Francisco, is famous for the nuts, pistachios, milk, and fruit that it grows.
Today, the area around the farmland in the San Joaquin Valley is mostly desert. Back in the day, though, this area was a thriving and varied habitat, full of trees, wetlands, and a huge lake that made the ground perfect for farming. It was less than fifty years before this lake, which was about the same size as Utah’s Great Salt Lake, dried up. There are still a lot of questions about why such a large amount of water was drained so quickly.
For thousands of years, Tulare Lake has been an important part of the San Joaquin Valley. It was once the biggest body of water west of the Mississippi River. But in the late 1800s, people started draining Tulare Lake, which ended with it being completely gone by the middle of the 1900s.
