Within days of taking office, US President Donald Trump unveiled his deportation program. On Monday, he signed an executive order instructing federal agencies to deny citizenship to children born in the United States if neither parent is a US citizen or lawful permanent resident. But a federal judge blocked the implementation of the order, calling it “blatantly unconstitutional”. Even 22 states filed lawsuits against the directive, arguing it “violated” the citizenship clause of the 14th Amendment, which guarantees citizenship to anyone born on US soil. Meanwhile, hundreds of US soldiers have been deployed to the Mexico border, and construction of additional barriers is underway to prevent illegal crossings.
