Ramaphosa denies discrimination as ‘disinformation’ by Ronelle Snyders

If Ramaphosa stands so strongly in his “faith” that there is no discrimination, why does he not repeal the Bela Act and the Expropriation Act?

Will he sever his strong ties with China, Russia and Iran to prove discrimination is “disinformation”?

Presidential spokesperson Vincent Magwenya said at a press conference on Ramaphosa’s program in Parliament on Wednesday that the long-standing relations between South Africa and America are strong enough to survive the recent uproar over Trump’s false demand for land seizure.

Ramaphosa responded on Monday that government had not confiscated any land and the Expropriation Act was aimed at ensuring public access to land “in a fair and equitable manner”, as guided by South Africa’s Constitution.

Ramaphosa then had a call with Musk in which they discussed “issues of misinformation and distortions about South Africa”, the presidency said on Tuesday.

Magwenya told journalists on Wednesday morning that Pretoria was particularly “upset” by Musk’s reaction to Ramaphosa on X.

“Following President Trump’s announcement, we issued a statement placed on X outside the president’s handle, as well as the presidency’s handle. There was a response to that statement by Elon, and we were obviously upset by the content of the announcement because there were clearly inaccuracies in terms of reflecting the country and what’s happening in the country,” he said.

“The X platform is a hugely influential platform. It is owned by Elon Musk. The President made commitments with Elon Musk prior to this announcement with the intention of seeing him invest more in South Africa.”

Magwenya said in light of Musk’s response to X, “it was sensible and logical and very important for the president to engage with him, so that we can strengthen his own understanding of what is happening in South Africa”.

He said that in the meeting between Ramaphosa and Musk, the president had “flagged” his concerns regarding the “disinformation” in Trump’s initial false claim of land seizure, but also regarding Musk’s own response to Ramaphosa’s statement.

“The president has been very emphatic in saying that South Africa does not have racist property laws. All our laws take their cue from our Constitution, and where they do not comply with the Constitution, we have an independent judiciary that deals with those issues without any political interference whatsoever. And these are South Africa’s strengths, which we will reiterate over and over and over again – not just to the Trump administration, but to others who may have some form of doubt about the state of this country,” Magwenya said.

“We are a country that respects the rule of law, and there are just certain things that we will not do, and there are certain things that will never happen in South Africa.”

He said it was “important” for Ramaphosa and Musk to have this conversation so that this understanding is emphasized – “at least to benefit [Musk], but also, given his influence within the Trump circle, for the president to deliver that message”.

The South African ambassador to the US, Ebrahim Rasool, has already “hit the ground running”, Magwenya said, and will spearhead engagements at various levels of Trump’s administration.

He said Pretoria also hopes that US Secretary of State Marco Rubio will attend the G20 meeting of foreign ministers in Johannesburg on February 20.

“If he doesn’t attend, we know that there will be a delegation of senior officials representing the State Department and the Trump administration with whom we will have an opportunity to engage. And so, based on that, those engagements will continue.”

“What AfriForum has adopted as its hallmark is to sow racial division and sow fear among their group of supporters. And we would argue, they have done this successfully among a very small group of people. They have been loud enough to then find an ear within certain circles in the American leadership establishment.”

“But for the president to spend time engaging them on something they know about their deliberate behavior to misrepresent our country; a misrepresentation of the intent and the spirit of our laws – I’m not entirely sure that this will be the prudent use of the president’s time,” Magwenya said.

“I will have my doubts about the effectiveness of him [Ramaphosa] investing time to become involved with AfriForum, because there is nothing they do not know about our Constitution.”

The statement suggests that the “common sense” of the people, Musk and the President of America’s intelligence is underestimated. America stands up for us as ordinary people and does not try to impose dictatorships in South Africa with money like China, Russia and Iran.

With the signing of the Bela Act and Expropriation Act, the term “Democracy” has completely changed to a dictatorship where the opposition parties that are supposed to act in the best interest of our people, bow the knee against autocratic dictatorship…….we are the second Zimbabwe.
