It seems that China is preparing for war. President Xi Jinping is making the world’s largest military complex, about 30kms southwest of the capital Beijing. Dubbed the ‘Beijing Military City’, this 1500-acre complex is expected to be nearly 10 times bigger that the US Defence Ministry, Pentagon. This military command centre will be an underground facility, and will house the People’s Liberation Army. The PLA is currently housed at a Cold War-era facility called the Western Hills Complex. The new Beijing Military City is expected to have everything — large and hardened bunkers, deep underground tunnelling, and state-of-the-art weaponry. It is being made using heavily reinforced concrete, strong enough to survive nuclear attacks. China already has the world’s largest military, and a war-time command centre 10 times the size of Pentagon will keep the US worried. The construction has already begun last year, and China has at least 100 cranes working at the site. It is believed that Xi wanted to keep this facility a secret from the world, and civilian access has also been banned in the area.
But apart from the US, should India also be worried about the military ambitions of its neighbour China? After all, India felt the brunt of China’s ‘expansionist ambitions’ at its borders, not less than five years ago. So, will New Delhi increase its defence spending to up the ante against a possibly impending offensive from Beijing? And, could it have an impact on India’s Union Budget 2025?
