A 5.8 magnitude earthquake struck Taiwan’s northeastern Yilan County on Wednesday, shaking buildings in the capital Taipei but causing no reported damage, according to local authorities. Taiwan’s meteorological agency reported the quake at a depth of 72.4 km, while the U.S. Geological Survey recorded it as a 5.0 magnitude tremor. No impact was reported at the island’s vital semiconductor hubs. Taiwan, located along the Pacific “Ring of Fire,” is prone to frequent seismic activity, with past quakes in 1999 and 2024 causing major destruction and loss of life.
