SERIOUS CONCERNS ABOUT THE REPORTED CLOSURE OF THE NATIONAL POLICE INSPECTORATE
I have been informed of reports suggesting that the National Commissioner of the South African Police Service (SAPS) has taken the alarming decision to disband SAPS’ National Inspectorate Division. To verify these claims, I have already written to the National Commissioner seeking clarity. The National Inspectorate plays an indispensable role in ensuring accountability and public trust within SAPS. It serves as an internal mechanism to uphold discipline, identify inefficiencies, and recommend corrective measures across police stations and units. This oversight structure is vital to:Holding police officers and management accountable.Enhancing service delivery to communities.Combatting internal misconduct through effective disciplinary action.Ensuring SAPS resources are allocated equitably and utilized effectively.Developing policies and strategies that prioritize crime prevention and public safety.Shutting down the National Inspectorate would be a devastating blow to SAPS’ ability to reform itself and regain public confidence at a time when trust in law enforcement is already fragile. What is even more concerning is that the Portfolio Committee on Police—tasked with overseeing SAPS—has not been formally informed or consulted about this reported decision. This raises serious questions about transparency and the decision-making process at the highest levels of SAPS leadership.I will request that the National Commissioner and the Minister of Police, Senzo Mchunu, appear before the Portfolio Committee as a matter of urgency. Their accountability is paramount, and they must provide a full explanation of this reported move, which threatens to undermine efforts to improve law enforcement in South Africa.
