Hawks spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Matimba Maluleke said they were working to arrest more suspects linked to the theft of R36 million from the bank account of a dead man who died in a car accident.
Nine people were apprehended this week for their alleged involvement. They were arrested in various provinces, including KwaZulu-Natal.
Maluleke says they believe the mastermind behind the deal is 29-year-old FNB employee Thabiso Metenda.
It is alleged that on 25 April 2022, Matenda opened several accounts of a deceased client without any authorisation and paid and stole R36 989 052,67 in it.
The officer was among nine people, aged between 35 and 48, who were arrested this week in connection with the case of theft.
Moses Banda, 48, the alleged mastermind, Nomaphelo Sethi, 28, and Rody Martial Nzeya, 43, have already appeared in court for their alleged involvement.
The persons will appear in court next week.
