    After the news broke this week (Wednesday 12 July) that the AARTO Act was upheld by Chief Justice Raymond Zondo in the Constitutional Court, we decided to compile a series of lists of new AARTO penalties.

    There are currently 2 659 offences listed on the AARTO website. You can find a full list including their fines and associated demerit points below:

    As a reminder, under the new AARTO penalties, motorists may only receive 15 demerit points on their license before suspension. You can be suspended twice before your driving license is taken away permanently. Each suspension means having to retake a driver’s/learner’s qualification test.

    STRICT NEW AARTO PENALTIES

    Unauthorised tampering with vehicle Court 6
    Furnishing false information Court 6
    False number plate Court 6
    Following too closely R1 000 3
    Driver not positioned to exercise control of vehicle R1 000 3
    Failing to give way to emergency vehicle R500 1
    Driving on the sidewalk R500 1
    Driving while using a hand-held cellphone R500 1
    Failing to yield to pedestrian at crossing R500 1
    Overtaking stationary vehicle at pedestrian crossing R500 1
    Racing on public road R1 000 3
    Wilful obstruction of traffic flow R750 2
    Abandoned vehicle R500 1
    Damaging public road R1 000 3

    You can check the current status of any infringement notices issued against you by visiting the AARTO website:

    • Click on “query my fine”.

    • Provide your ID number and driving license number.

    • Juristic entities can provide their business register number and the ID number of a proxy.
