It might come as no surprise, but it still makes for tough reading to see how badly South Africa ranks globally for crime. Sadly, South Africa is ranked seven out of 193 countries for criminality. And third on the continent after the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and Nigeria.
These findings that show how poorly South Africa ranks globally for crime come from the Global Initiative Against Transnational Organised Crime, which recently published its Organised Crime Index report. In response, the Democratic Alliance (DA) has said it’s, “Appalled by the latest crime statistics which show South Africa now ranks 7th in the world for mafia-style criminal networks and organised crime syndicates.” It blamed the ANC for bleeding the country dry with crime and corruption.

South Africa has climbed up the rankings of worldwide criminality, from number 19 in 2021 to number seven in 2023. The country’s criminality score of 6.63 in 2021 has jumped to 7.18 this year. That’s a world ranking we cannot be too proud off. How South African ranks globally for crime is measured on a scale of one to 10.
According to data from the index, human trafficking, sex trafficking, child labour, domestic servitude, organ smuggling, child brides and labour exploitation is on the rise in the country. Likewise, the country suffers significant issues of arms trafficking, with millions of illegal and/or stolen firearms in circulation, the report said.

Similarly, South Africa is showing an increased presence in the global drug trade. Worryingly, the report stated that South Africa is one of the largest heroin consumer markets in Africa. And it has become a major player in the global cocaine trade. Drugs come in shipping containers from Brazil, South America, and are distributed through South Africa to other destinations in Africa and globally.
