The Alternative for Germany (AfD), Germany’s main right-wing party, has called for migrants to be deported.

This is ahead of an election to be held next month.

At a party conference AfD’s leader, Alice Weidel, spoke of “large-scale repatriations” and what she called “remigration” – the deportation of people with migrant backgrounds. People are divided over the term with some saying “remigration” would only affect people in the country illegally, while others claim that anyone with a migrant background could be under threat.

The party’s manifesto also calls for Germany to quit the Paris climate deal, leave the euro and dismantle the EU, as well as close the country’s borders.

Most polling shows the AfD to be the second most-popular party in the country at present, with its support hovering at about 20%. The Christian Democrats and their Bavarian ally, the Christian Social Union, are polling at about 30%, with the Social Democrats and the Greens polling at about 15%.

The Social Democrats and the Greens currently form part of the German national governing coalition, along with the Free Democrats, who are currently polling at 4%: below the electoral threshold to secure representation in the Bundestag.
