Alberta premier reacts to ruling on federal environmental assessment law – October 13, 2023

In Calgary, Alberta Premier Danielle Smith reacts to the Supreme Court of Canada’s ruling that the federal government’s Impact Assessment Act is largely unconstitutional. Introduced as Bill C-69, the law came into effect in 2019 and overhauled the environmental assessment process for major resource projects. The Alberta government argued that the legislation exceeded federal jurisdiction and launched a legal challenge. The Alberta Court of Appeal found that the Act was not constitutional in May 2022.
