Fri 04 August 2023:
A Romanian court Friday lifted a house arrest order on controversial influencer Andrew Tate and his brother who will now be placed under judicial control as they await trial on human trafficking charges.
The court has placed Tate, a social media personality known for expressing controversial views, under judicial control, a less restrictive measure.
The Bucharest court of appeals said in a written ruling that it “replaces the house arrest measure with that of judicial control for a period of 60 days from August 4 until October 2”.
The former professional kickboxer has consistently argued that Romanian prosecutors lack proof and that the case is a political plot to silence him.
Tate, who has been primarily located in Romania since 2017, is an internet influencer with millions of followers, primarily among young guys.
Speaking outside his home in Bucharest following the ruling, Tate said: “We’ve been completely innocent since the beginning of this, and I have absolute faith in the Romanian judicial for finally making the right decision and setting us free.
Tate and his brother Tristan, both of whom have dual US and British citizenship, were charged in June along with two Romanian female suspects of human trafficking, rape and forming a criminal gang to sexually exploit women. The suspects have denied the allegations.
Under the new measure, the four suspects can leave the house, but not Bucharest and the surrounding Ilfov county. They must check in regularly with the police. They are also banned from trying to approach the alleged victims.
“I’m sure in the end we will be absolutely exonerated. I’ve done nothing wrong, God knows I’ve done nothing wrong, in my heart, I know I’ve done nothing wrong.
“I look forward to being completely exonerated in due time.”
A spokesperson for the Tate brothers said: “We would like to extend our sincere gratitude to the Romanian judicial system for their fair consideration.
“This positive outcome gives us confidence that more favourable developments are on the horizon and the truth is beginning to prevail.”
Romania’s anti-organised crime agency alleged the four defendants had formed a criminal group in 2021 “in order to commit the crime of human trafficking” in Romania as well as the US and Britain.
Tate, a Muslim convert, also tweeted in response to the ruling, condemning charges that were “based on nothing” and which a judge had deemed “weak and circumstantial”.
“After €15m of asset seizures. After an indictment based on nothing. The file was passed to a judge, who has ruled it weak and circumstantial.
“I have been released from house arrest, but must remain within Romania.”
