There has been an alarming event in murder cases in Gauteng. Murder cases increased by 153 from 1 403 in last year’s fourth quarter to 1 556 in the fourth quarter of the 2022/23 financial year.
These crime statistics are from January to March 2023, which means that approximately 17 people are murdered per day in Gauteng.
“This shows that our government has failed and citizens have lost the war,” said Crezane Bosch, DA Gauteng shadow MEC for community safety.
Johannesburg Central Police Station is the highest nationally ranked in terms of contact crimes, from 988 in the fourth quarter of the 2021/2022 financial year to 1 054 in the fourth quarter of the 2022/23 financial year.
“There is therefore an urgent need for support and resources to equip the SAPS to fight crime,” Bosch added.
According to the crime statistics of the fourth quarter of the 2022/23 financial year, the following police stations reported murders, rape and serious cases:
Despite declining hijackings, Gauteng police stations lead the top 30 worst performing stations nationally.
“Furthermore, robberies, carjackings, kidnappings and cash-in transit crimes affect Gautengers because there are no specialised units to deal with certain specific crimes in the province.”
