A biscuit manufacturing company situated in Korsten in Gqeberha has been closed due to concerns over unhygienic and other health conditions.
Spokesperson Colonel Priscilla Naidu says members of the Gqeberha Border Police followed up on information about possible suspicious activity at the factory.
She says they entered the premises where the owner was very cooperative, allowing police to search the premises.
Colonel Naidu says the officer did not find anything illegal but expressed concern over the unhygienic and health conditions the factory was working in.
She says they stumbled upon this by accident and went above and beyond their duties by alerting the Environmental Health Department and brand agents.
The factory was closed by the relevant authorities under the Foodstuffs, Cosmetics and Disinfectants Act 54/1972 (regulation 638 of 2018) – concern hygienic requirements for the handling, transporting and storage of food. An enquiry is under investigation by the relevant authority.
