Six provinces in South Africa still aren’t supported on the National Administration Traffic Information System (Natis) online platform, and their respective transport departments have been silent on plans to join it.

The online renewal service for driving licence cards and vehicle licence discs was launched nearly three years ago. It has supported renewals in Gauteng from the start, with the Eastern Cape joining at a later date.

The North West is the latest addition to the platform, joining sometime after May 2024.

However, this leaves motorists in six provinces, namely the Free State, KwaZulu-Natal, Limpopo, Mpumalanga, the Northern Cape, and the Western Cape, without access to the online service.

Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) spokesperson Simon Zwane has told MyBroadband that the relevant provincial authorities must decide whether to support the platform.

“The RTMC has made the service available to all provinces and will be able to roll it out as soon as the provincial authorities indicate their readiness to have the services,” said Zwane.

He also said the outstanding provinces had shown interest in the platform and that the RTMC is ready to assist them in integrating their systems once they’re ready.

So far, only the North West, Eastern Cape, and Gauteng provinces have introduced the services in their province.

MyBroadband asked the outstanding provinces’ transport departments about their plans to join the platform, but none had answered our questions by publication.

The Western Cape transport and public works department previously said it would only consider implimenting the eNatis system at its DLTCs in the 2025/26 financial year.

This will only happen after it rolls out smart enrollment machines, which is planned for the 2024/2025 financial year.

In earlier feedback from May 2024, Western Cape transport and public works spokesperson Jandré Bakker told MyBroadband that the province decided not to enrol because the system facedsignifcant challenges in Gauteng

“The department has been waiting for a report on the experience of Gauteng to assist with the decision-making process,” he said.

He added that the report had recently been received and had to be analysed by departmental officials.

In February 2022, the RTMC added the ability to book driving licence renewals on the eNatis website. While the booking process has been modernised, motorists must still visit driving licence testing centres (DLTCs) to complete their renewals.

This eliminates the frustration of queueing to pay at the Department of Transport’s DLTCs and enables other online services, such as licence disc renewals.

“The system is going to be easier from now on,” said RTMC CEO Makhosini Msibi.

“We are making it easy for all South Africans to conduct this business in the comfort of their homes, without having to queue at the DLTCs.”

Motorists can pay with a credit card, debit card, or electronic funds transfer (EFT).

“You’ll pay using a credit card to renew a driver’s licence, and also be provided with a variety of options,” said Msibi.

Despite some teething issues, the eNatis booking system for driving licence and licence disc renewals works well and has proven popular among motorists in supported provinces.

Regarding licence disc renewals, it had processed more than two million transactions for the service between February 2022 and June 2024.

This makes it the country’s most popular online licence disc renewal service and its cheapest renewal service.

In comparison, FNB’s renewal service, which is only available to the bank’s customers, had processed around 465,000 transactions as of June 2024. It launched in November 2016.
