The R34 near Nkwalini in the uThungulu district of KZN was a non-driving zone this morning after a cash-in-transit (CIT) vehicle was bombed.
The incident took place just after 09:00 near KwaMbhekaphansi.
Reports from the scene suggest the CIT vehicle was destroyed in the blast, and a light motor vehicle also caught fire.
The number of suspects is not clear at this stage, nor is it clear whether the guards were injured in the attack or not.
According to residents of Emasungeni reserve, a loud bang was heard from the vicinity of the incident, which they said was a truck tyre that ruptured.
Traffic was blocked in both directions as emergency personnel took care of the scene.
Captain Siyanda Shangase, King Cetshwayo Cluster police spokesman, confirmed the incident. “At this point, it’s unclear how this incident occurred,” he said.
