Bookkeeper gets 12 years in prison for R9 million tax fraud against SARS-written BY RONELLE SNYDERS

Jessica Marieka Janse Van Niewenhuys, a 35-year-old accountant, has been sentenced to 12 years in prison for orchestrating a sophisticated tax fraud operation that cost the South African Revenue Service (SARS) more than R9 million.

She was sentenced on Friday by the Free State division of the High Court in Bloemfontein after a thorough investigation by the Hawks’ Serious Commercial Crime Investigation Unit.

Janse Van Niewenhuys was arrested with her husband Petrus Janse Van Niewenhuys (36) after they moved to Port Elizabeth, Eastern Cape, in May 2024. The charges against the man were withdrawn.

Janse Van Niewenhuys has since been found guilty of 181 counts of fraud, along with 38 counts of money laundering, and has been declared unfit to possess a firearm.

“Jessica, who was responsible for accounting for four companies based in Paris, filed fraudulent tax returns on behalf of these companies. She further filed fraudulent returns on behalf of her husband, who was then employed by a company that did projects at various mines,” Matoti said.

Head of the Hawks in the Free State, Major General Mokgadi Bokaba welcomed the sentencing.

She said Janse Van Niewenhuys’ sentence should send a strong message to other criminals and added that a process is underway to recover benefits from this crime.
