Thailand is set to become a Brics member state after it accepted Russia’s invitation to join the bloc.

The country located in southeast Asia will prepare for its accession as a member state to the Brics bloc.

    THAILAND INVITED AS BRICS MEMBER

On 24 December, the spokesperson for Thailand’s Foreign Ministry, Nikorndej Balankura, said that Thailand had responded to an invitation to join Brics.

Thailand responded positively to Russia’s invitation on Tuesday 24 December, following the Thai Cabinet’s consideration of the invitation extended by Russia on 31 October 2024.

The 16th Brics Summit took place in Kazan, Russia, from 22 to 24 October, this year.

It was the first BRICS summit to include Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, and the United Arab Emirates as members, following their accession to the organization after the 15th Brics summit held in Johannesburg in 2023.

    BRICS CHAIR

Russia chaired the bloc for 2024. Brazil will take over as Brics chair from 1 January 2025.

After this year’s summit, Russia extended a membership invite to Thailand on 31 October.

The Nation reports that Algeria and Bolivia have also been proposed for Brics membership.

    BENEFIT FOR THAILAND

Nikorndej said that Brics membership would indeed be a significant milestone for Thailand.

He said that the country has indeed committed to enhancing collaboration with Brics to boost economic opportunities.

“BRICS comprises countries with high economic potential on trade, investment and tourism,” Nikorndej said.

Thai government spokesperson, Jirayu Houngsub, also said that Brics membership would benefit the country’s trade, investment, finance, food and energy security.

Nikorndej said that his ministry will work with relevant agencies in Thailand to prepare for Brics membership.

    BRICS PARTNER COUNTRIES

In fact, Thailand was among 13 nations named as potential new Brics partner countries on 24 October.

Other nations include Algeria, Belarus, Bolivia, Cuba, Indonesia, Kazakhstan, Malaysia, Nigeria, Turkey, Uganda, Uzbekistan and Vietnam.

However, only three of these nations have been proposed for membership: Thailand, Algeria and Bolivia.

    BRICS MEMBER STATES

Brics is an international bloc established in 2006 as a coalition of large emerging markets.

Currently, it has 10 member states.

This includes Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, Iran, Egypt, Ethiopia, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates.

Significantly, the bloc works to promote cooperation in the global South for more inclusive and sustainable governance.

Several countries have shown interest in joining the bloc.

Do you think Brics will benefit from member states like Thailand?
