Carney wins Liberal Party vote in Canada
Mark Carney, the former governor of both the Canadian and English central banks, has won an election to become the next leader of the Canadian Liberal Party, and he will be the country’s next prime minister.
Carney won the leadership election with over 80% of the vote, easily seeing off three other candidates, with over 150,000 ordinary Liberal Party members casting ballots. He has never held any elected position.
He is likely to be sworn in as the next Canadian prime minister in the next few days, succeeding Justin Trudeau.
Carney vowed he would help Canada win the trade war against the United States.
Canada is likely to go to the polls in the next few months. The Liberal Party has been trailing the opposition Conservatives in the polls, but in recent weeks the Liberals have seen a surge in support. The election is too close to call at present.
