Crime Statistics: Cele admits that few people trust the police
The murder rate for the last three months of last year was announced a short time ago by Police Minister Bheki Cele.
According to the data, the murder rate rose 2.1% nationwide compared to the three months before October 1st. This means that 155 more people were killed between October 1 and December 31, 2023.
According to Cele, there was a decline in the amount of murders in KwaZulu-Natal, the Eastern Cape and the Free State. 22 people were killed on farms, three of whom, one farm workers, 16 people who lived on the farm and two visitors.
According to Cele, 4,882 people were arrested for murder in the period in question, while nearly 3,700 people were charged for attempted murder.
Cele acknowledged during the announcement that citizens have little confidence in the police. He believes he realizes that there are many “rotten apples”, but that there are also thousands of police officer who do their job very well.
A touch of good news is that there is no longer a backlog in the amount of DNA tests. There were more than 150,000 overdue DNA tests at one point. There was also a decrease in the amount of transit robberies. 46 Transit robberies were reported, so it decreased with eleven incidents.
In terms of property -related crimes, there was a 2.9%decline, including the amount of burglaries at homes.
