Crime Stats: GAUTENG- Epicenter of SA’s kidnapping cases

The recently released crime stats have revealed a significant rise in kidnapping cases in the country, with half the cases taking place in Gauteng.

The third quarter crime stats report of crimes committed between October and December 2023.

In just the 90-day window period observed, 4 577 kidnapping cases were reported- 11% higher than the same period in 2022.

Provincially Gauteng reported the most cases with 2 367 cases. It is followed in the distance by KwaZulu-Natal with 796 cases and the Western Cape with 305.

According to police, in a sample size of 3 975 cases, randsom was demanded in only 138 cases. While 23 cases were human trafficking- 15 of which took place in the Northern Cape.

The following police station reported the highest number of kidnapping cases in the country between October and December 2023.

3. Orange Farm- 69

4. Tembisa- 59

5. Umlazi- 53

6. Lenasia- 51

7. Eldorado Park- 50

8. Ivory Park- 50

9. Evaton- 48

10. Midrand- 46
