Nicaragua is a country located in Central America, with a total land area of 130,400 square kilometers, making it one of the largest countries in Central America. Nicaragua’s economy is relatively backward and it is one of the least developed countries in Central America.

As the world’s second-largest economy, China has risen rapidly in the past few decades and has actively promoted international cooperation. In addition to its own development, China is also committed to helping some poor countries build infrastructure. And the country “Nicaragua” in Central America is one of them.

In 2020, China completed the construction of a 275-kilometer modern canal project in Nicaragua. The canal is more than three times the length of the Panama Canal and can accommodate ships with a maximum tonnage of 400,000 tons. The completion of the canal has made Nicaragua a more important regional and international transportation hub, promoting the country’s economic development and trade.

In addition to the previously built canal, China has also signed an important project with Nicaragua in 2022. It is reported that this project will build about 12,000 housing units in several cities in Nicaragua to alleviate the housing problems of local people. The project is expected to cost approximately US$150 million and is the first large-scale cooperation project between China and Nepal since the resumption of diplomatic relations in 2021.
